Every soul-searching person on this planet has pondered these questions at one point or another:
“Why am I here?”
“What’s the point of all of this?”
“What’s my purpose?”
I spent the first half of my life wondering these things, and every now and then I still wonder if I’m on the right track. Though I am intuitive and can get amazing insights, I’m also humble, and I wouldn’t dare to presume to know everything there is to know.
Many of the people who come see me for sessions ask about their purpose in life. What I’ve found most interesting, though, is that people who ask this in appointments aren’t so much seeking overall fulfillment in life in general, as they are asking “What can I do for money that will make me feel happy and make a difference in the world?”
Career Purpose vs. General Purpose
So in searching for your purpose, you have to first get clear on that one HUGE issue: are you seeking purpose career-wise, or just life-in-general-wise?
If you’re looking for ways to find your purpose career-wise, answer the following questions:
What do I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to do?
Would I want to do any of these things as a JOB, or keep them as a hobby?
What am I good at? Like, REALLY good at?
What do other people always say I’m good at?
Do I like working alone, or with others?
Do I like working inside, or outside? For a big company, or a small organization?
Do I want to work for other people, or for myself?
What does my SOUL want and need?
Just sit with your answers for a while, meditate on where you see yourself, and then write out any ideas and insights you might have. You can also get the classic book, “What Color is your Parachute?” to help fine-tune your direction. Another thing that’s helpful is the Myers-Briggs Personality Test. That will help give you insight into the type of person you are and what fulfills you emotionally, which is super helpful when it comes to choosing a career you love.
If you’re trying to figure out the point of your struggles, triumphs and relationships with others and with yourself, ask yourself these questions:
What themes keep coming up in my life? Are there certain patterns that keep repeating themselves?
What do I seriously struggle with all the time?
What could I do to be happier?
What could I do to help bring happiness to the world around me?
What do I love to do?
What would I love to do to be of service to others?
What are my greatest strengths?
What are my greatest weaknesses?
Meditate on the answers you get to these questions, and as you get to that deep, quiet state, try and connect with your higher self. As you do, just ask the question “Who am I?” and just try and get a sense of the true nature of your spirit. Your spirit can show you the answers as to why you’re here, what your big lessons are (the things you struggle with) and how to overcome them, what karma you need to resolve, and how you can evolve and grow.
We are all here for a reason, and everyone has not one, but a multitude of purposes. Finding out who you really are, and what your purposes are, can be one of the most fulfilling things you do in this lifetime, and put you straight on the path of spiritual growth and progress.
